Conversation with California Photographer Chris Cummins

I had the pleasure of speaking with Chris Cummins, a large format photographer and printmaker based in California.

Check out our conversation here:

I have followed him for about a year on instagram, and his beautiful, classic work really brings me back to why I fell in love with photography in the first place.

Calla Lily Study 1, Garrapata Beach, Big Sur
8×10 negative, 240mm lens, f:36, 3 sec, N+2 development

When I started in photography I was told many times, “Don’t quit your day job.” The suggestion that I stay a hobbyist was probably a comment on my shit skills but of course, it was also practical advice. Chris puts himself in the hobby camp (“Photography brought me to California. My work in tech paid for it.”) but I don’t suspect he will stay there for long. Working in a medium that demands real skill, he has a great eye for classic composition and a dedication to his craft. Chris has also done a great job building a dedicated fan base by sharing his work and process.
